While it’s important to enjoy your own company and to be okay with being alone, it’s also very important to your mental health to have healthy friendships. No matter your age. And, in fact, social connection is a very big part of healthy aging and the prevention of age-related cognitive decline.

Mark Twain famously said, “Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.”

Here are some other facts quick loneliness facts we found interesting:

  • Loneliness, living alone, and poor social connections are as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. (Holt-Lunstad, 2010)
  • Loneliness is worse for you than obesity. (Holt-Lunstad, 2010)
  • Lonely people are more likely to suffer from dementia, heart disease and depression. (Valtorta et al, 2016) (James et al, 2011) (Cacioppo et al, 2006)
  • Loneliness is likely to increase your risk of death by 29%. (Holt-Lunstad, 2015)

Activities with friends often involve some form of exercise, whether it’s a simple walk in the park, a game of golf, or even an adventurous hike. Even less strenuous activities, such as a meal or a movie, usually require some mobility. These activities stimulate both the body and the mind, which is essential for maintaining health in older age.

Engaging in social activities and meaningful conversations can keep the mind sharp. Research shows that seniors with active social lives are less likely to suffer from dementia than their less social counterparts. Stimulating conversations, problem-solving, and even the laughter and joy that friends bring, can serve as effective exercises for the brain.

Retirement offers the time and freedom to pursue hobbies, volunteer, or even travel—providing ample opportunities to meet new people and form new friendships. Likewise, it’s an excellent period to nurture and strengthen current friendships, perhaps rekindling connections with old friends with whom you’ve lost touch.
